woman's profile photo of a sunset

Why Do So Many Women Include Photos of Sunsets or Dogs?

When your profile pic shows anything but a clear headshot of your face – whether that’s a sunset, your fur baby, a meme, or an avatar/caricature – then it sends a clear message.

You don’t want potential matches to see your face.

Maybe you feel like the camera hates you. Maybe you don’t want a man to judge you based on how you look. Maybe you’re embarrassed. Maybe you don’t want anyone to find out you’re online dating for safety or privacy reasons.

You could have 1001 legitimate reasons not to want to show your face, but the men scrolling past won’t know that.

All they know is that they have no idea what you look like, so they’re not interested.

It’s fascinating to see how men try to bolster their attractiveness with objects (a car, a gun, a dead animal) while women try to bolster their attractiveness with emotion-inspiring imagery.

Sunsets are peaceful, serene, and beautiful. Pets are warm, cute, and cuddly.

Those are emotions a woman might hope to inspire in or experience with a potential match.

Just as men often perform toughness, women are often expected to perform pleasantness. That expectation shapes how profiles are built.

Instead of asking, “What actually represents me?” many women unconsciously ask: “What will make me acceptable to the widest number of people?” Sunsets and dogs are excellent answers to that question.

But they are not always good answers to a different question: “What would make the right person recognize me?”
