Profile pictures have a clear and simple purpose:
To show potential dates what you look like.
So why substitute a picture of his car (or dream car) instead?
Simple answer:
Because he sees his car as an extension of himself.
Some studies have found boy babies pay more attention to objects, while girl babies pay more attention to faces. This is a classic example of that gender difference.
He thinks women will read his choice of car as the same way he does: as a shortcut to who he is.
There’s a more complex answer.
Some men believe that women are attracted to wealth and status.
They don’t think they’re attractive, so they search for status symbols to include in their photos.
A Rolex watch. A high-end sportscar. A photo taken in a luxury destination, like an African safari or a private plane.
They think that women are more likely to give them a chance if they’re perceived as cultured, worldly, and wealthy.
Unfortunately, instead of reading as wealth, the photo can be read as trying too hard.
Showing off signals the opposite of status. And the women it attracts are the women who are drawn to a luxury lifestyle, not character traits.
The lesson for men?
You are enough.
Just you. No car. No fish. No buddies.
His face is the information she needs to make a decision about whether to date him.
She looks for evidence of character qualities like kindness, temperament, and trustworthiness, which matter much more than the type of car he drives.
